The Celts used knotwork to decorate many of their artefacts. To them, the intricate patterns woven into knots symbolised the continuity of life.
Cultured pearls can be divided into salt-water and freshwater varieties. They account for over 95% of world production. Freshwater pearls are grown in mussels. A nucleus of shaped mantle from another mollusc is placed inside the muscle where it slowly grows. A mussel can grow between 10 and 20 pearls.
