Founder Mrs Maura Hughes began knitting the story of Aran Woollen Mills in 1965, when she established the business to follow her passion for Irish craft, heritage and to provide employment locally in the West of Ireland.
Home for Aran Woollen Mills is the beautiful town of Westport, with a proud textile and Aran knitting industry that stretches back to the 18th century. Generations of craftspeople have been inspired by the dramatic landscape that surrounds — sparkling rivers, crystal clear lakes, the majestic Croagh Patrick Mountain at Clew Bay, and of course the wild Atlantic Ocean, an indelible source of inspiration for the design team.
There truly is a story behind every stitch. Whether it’s the fisherman’s cable for good luck or the honeycomb, a reward for hard work, Aran knitwear binds us to the land, customs, craft and heritage. It’s a chance to wear a piece of history.
